Zisis Economou

Zisis Economou Zisis Economou

Born in Skiathos, Zisis Economou lived in Athens where he cooperated with literary magazines. His first literature appearance was in 1930 in the Athenian journal Nea Genia, with publications of his lyrics and in 1934 he released his first collection of poems entitled “The epic of vegetative metals” .

He learned German and Italian, and during the Greek-Italian war (1940 -1941) served as an interpreter.
From the mid fifties until 1976 he interrupted his poetical publications and worked on research in the linguistic, sociologic and political fields. Later in his life, Zisis Economou lived in his home-island and was engaged with maritime and agricultural work.

Placed in the inter-war generation of the Greek poets, he received in 1977 the poetry award from the Academy of Athens, for all his work and especially for his book "Cloudless silence". In 1995 he was honoured with the National Prize of Poetry for his book “THE CHRONICLE OF NEW PROPER ORDER FOR THE NEW AGE”.

His poetry path covered a widespread themes and stylistic range. The main objective of the poet was the search of a uniform worldview that draws elements on all aspects of sciences and knowledge. Starting with this optimistic worldview theory into futurism and surrealism and praising the engineering technology, he quickly passed into the process of folding in the western rationalism and turned towards an individualistic worldview. This vision influenced his study of Eastern religions, especially Buddhism and philosophers such as Schopenhaue , Berntiagief and Kaizerligk. This searches had an impact in his work and gradually led him to a more simple and drastic verse.
