Gail Stathakis

Gail Stathakis was born in Tynemouth, England, (née Bonham): She grew up in this area, close to the sea and beautiful beaches.  She always loved painting and art generally. At school she studied art and from the age of 12 also attended art classes at Newcastle University; then from 1966 – 69 studied to be an art teacher in Manchester; later teaching art at a Secondary school there.
In the early 70’s she came to live and work on Skiathos Island where she still live.  Although she always thought about painting, for many years her life here on Skiathos left little time to pursue it other than as a hobby.  Since 2004 she’s devoted time to her painting and have established herself as a professional artist.

Her work is primarily concerned with colour and light; the lush forests, the clear sea, the shoreline and the bright sunlight are her inspiration here in Skiathos.  She paints outside on sunny winter days or work in her studio. The natural beauty of Skiathos as well as the monasteries and the town are her main subjects.
In the past she’s worked in oils and acrylic but her favorite medium at present is soft pastel, she works in a manner to give the final colours a depth and intensity reminiscent of oil painting. Apart from painting she is interested in the publishing side of her art work and produce Limited Edition Prints and Greetings Cards.

Visitors to the island from many corners of the world have taken home both her Original Paintings and the Limited Edition Prints. Her work can now be found in private collections in Europe, U.S.A., Canada, Australia, New Zealand and more.

Her work is on view at Karavotsakisma House, please though call or email first for directions and to be sure she is there.
