John Fragoulas

John Fragoulas John Fragoulas

John N. Fragoulas was born on October 31, 1906 in Skiathos. He studied at Rizarios Ecclesiastical School of Athens University. He is the author of several books. He dealt particularly with the history and spiritual life of his country, Skiathos. His work "Skiathitika" (the language of Skiathos) (four volumes) was honored in 1987 with the Award of the Academy of Athens. Is about a unique of a kind work. John N. Fragoulas is, after Papadiamanti and Moraitidis the third spiritual child of Skiathos. He died in 2001 in Volos.

"I was born in Skiathos, the beautiful island of Northern Sporades, on 31 October 1906. In my baptism I took the name of John, the name of my father's brother, who drowned on 29 August 1895, while he returned with his boat from the feast of Saint John's of Kastro (Castro) and the incident was described by Alexis. Papadiamantis in the story "A drop of water".

With this section begins the book of J. N. Fragoulas "Autobiography". Continues, then in some way with the name that they give him, the life of his drowned uncle, Papadiamantis hero • is like they made a vow, unintentionally, to Papadiamantis. Later, it seems to promise him to 'another Alexander'. "During the period of my apprenticeship in Pizareio School often visited my uncle Alexander Moraitidi, who lived on the street Kapodistriou".

Observe faithfully both two vows: For Moraitidi and Papadiamanti wrote in my afterwards career, just 20 studies.

The proposal of Moraitidi, which seems to obscure the literary hierarchy, either random neither is unfair, since the first structured work of Fragoulas is the book "Alexander Moraitidis (chronological indicator of his life - Features articles about his work - Bibliography)", Boston 1950. He was followed the G. K. Katsimpali, with "Alexander Papadiamantis" managed to pick up the scattered parts of Papadiamantis . The same task accomplished the nephew of J. Fragoulas for Moraitidis uncle. With this study did not come out completely from the shadow of Papadiamantis, however, gave a necessary tool to few, scholars. The book comprises already 51 years of life, but is still a cornerstone for 'moraitidikes' studies.

The fundamental and without help for interpretative and historical annotation will always be the four-volume "Skiathos pop culture" by G. Rigas and also the four-volume 'Skiathitika' of Fragoulas. The priest Rigas is the folklorist-exemplary-of the island while the Dr. of Theology J. N. Fragoulas the historian and his registrar.

The term "registrar" next to 'historic' could be regarded as an under estimative for Fragoulas. Until then, even in different ways registrars of Skiathos were both Alexander. To ensure the safe, let us consider only the case of the story "A drop of water" with the mention which began the autobiography Fragoulas. Registrar, then with all him, especially with "Papadiamantiki, Skiathitiki Portrait" (Volos 1996), a work at first sight pedantic- if appear with eloquent essays and imaginative studies- but priceless. In fact this is the swan song that would forever restrict fantasies of those who interpret Papadiamantis as if they were outside of time and place and world. The "portrait" will continually point to the ghosts.

But Skiathos of Papadiamantis and Moraitidis was not whimsical place-and so groundless- as to be gone today. As early as the pre-eminent real island captured with great accuracy Fragoulas in 'Skiathitika'. To imprint he walked it, just like Alexander's inch by inch. From the walkthrough in a live soil and vital memories came the pages of the book "Nostalgic walk in the Island of two Alexander, Skiathos" (c edition 1999) an essential guide for respectful visitor of the island.

« My father was captain of Commerce Navy and he was owner of a schooner which traveled as the Alexandria and Marseilles ...». ("Autobiography", p. 8). Inevitable therefore, was Dr. Fragoulas to follow the roads of the sea. I mean the album in "The ship of Skiathos" (1995), a work with the biggest part his own, image of perpetual see road of formerly citizens of Skiathos - captains and brood.

We owe him a lot. And just for Chronologic of Papadiamantis and Moraitidis the debt are indescribable. If anyone ever could speaking for J. N. Fragoulas to mimic the one who impress his distant ancestor Fragoulas Fragoula in pleadingly "Reverie of Assumption". Enormous things I ask, but resting me the certainty that John Fragoulas who passed away as well for him in Papadiamantis period, seafaring "With the sails ", of angelic schooner that once Moraitidis traveled.
