Pre - 1453 AD

In a brief history flashback of the book "The Ships of Skiathos'' the professor of Theology J. N. Fragoulas mention that the first inhabitants of this island:

"In prehistoric period, in accordance with, what is written in the "Browsing" of the Anonymous writer, Pelasgians settled in Skiathos who came down from Thrace and were pre-Hellenic people and when the island became deserted, inhabited by Chalkideans. But before the Pelasgians to settled, is not impossible the Cares to were inhabitants of the Island, an Asian nation from the tribe of the Arion, as also is possible further than Chalkideans to stay on the Island and other nations and probably the Minoans of Crete.

The Chalkideans who were 'Ionians came to Skiathos in the period of colonial activity and perhaps in the fifth or sixth century and built the city in the southeast of the port, starting from its current location, "Ai Giannakis and extended in section called "Limnia". "It was walled up".

The next report of Skiathos identify during the Persian Wars:

"In 480 BC informed, as Herodotus writes, "using flare signals" the Greeks who were in the Artemisio in Evia for the exit of the Persian fleet from Thessaloniki. Afterwards on the coast which overlooking to Magnesia written the first phase of the sea battle with the three ships of Greek outpost and the ten detector of Persian ships, which were previously guidance by the Pamona, THE Skyrio, they placed on the reef Mirmika stone pillar of boulders to protect it from possible grounding from the Persian fleet (Herodotus VII 179-183).

In the following years Skiathos followed the Athenians and in first naval alliance on Timosthenes Lord (478 / 7 BC), where pay thousands of drachmas a year it was poor and in the second alliance on Nafsinikou Lord (378 / 7 BC .), in which case undertook financial and made their own bronze coins with the representations of Hermes and his emblem. Later it was used by Athenians as military base against Philip II of Macedonia.

In the Hellenistic and Roman period (338 BC - 330 AD)  Skiathos at first suffered enough, because the military operations with the Macedonians, Romans, Rhodius, Attalo takes place in surrounding areas, so the (200/199 BC) getting partial destruction from the Filippo_ E' of Macedonia. Later, from the winner Antony, in 42 BC was donated to the Athenians, but at that time counted in the poor islands and suitable as a place of exile and was concurrently a pirate hideout. During in Hadrians year was still custody of the Athenians and in Septimius Severus (193-211 AD) became independent with the Parliament, church of municipality and surname Lord. "

The only mention of Skiathos in the Byzantine period, as professor Mr. Frangoulas inform us, is from the Simeon the Translator:

"... that the Slavic tribes" "all the Thesalians and all the islands around, Skopelos and Skiathos, siege and  moved in", has not supporters today. The only certainly is that from the Z-AD century began in the Aegean Sea, the pirate raids of the Saracens who were in the coastal villages and islands in constant fear for their lives and their development.

Following the dissolution of the Byzantine Empire from the Franks, Skiathos were occupied in 1207 the Venetian brothers Andrew and Jeremiah Gizis, who built the fort and the harbor, known as Bourtzi, and ruled the island until 1276, who expelled them the Byzantine admiral Likarios. "
