Geography

In the book "Skiathitika Boats",(boats of Skiathos), publication of the Foundation Thomas and Vanda Epifaniadi, Dr. Theology. Ion.N. Fragoulas says for the geographical location of Skiathos as follows:

"It is an island of the Northern Sporades, east of  Magnesia and Pelion, where the strait separating about two miles. From ancient times until today the Island named Skiathos as the most likely opinion may be took the name from the shadow, if we consider to many forests of the island and the large shadow that formed.

It has 47 square kilometers land area, is mountainous with the highest mountain Cross (433 m), but has too many low-lying areas and the ground is fertile and verdant, mainly by olive trees. The climate is mild and healthy and the major product of is oil. The shores having a length of 44 km. , are accessible with beautiful coves and bays, with the exception of the steep and towering coast of Castro, the giant rock, which lived up the medieval town of Skiathos. It has major and secured port, famous since ancient times, surrounded by a series of larger and smaller islands where most of them gathered at the harbor entrance. "
