Nature

The island is part of the Northern Sporades islands archipelagos, which consists of Skyros, Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and many other small uninhabited islands.

Skiathos is a very green island, with partly wild vegetation, many beautiful shores, bays and small peninsulas. The sea around the island is very clear and over 10 beaches have been awarded the blue flag by the Greek Society for the Protection of Nature, is Environmental NGO HSPN. The GSPN represents in Greece the International Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), non-government, non-profit organization, the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).
Around the island there are many small rocky islands, which protect the Island from storms (especially in the winter period where there are strong storms). Thanks to this protection, the landside of Skiathos can host unique flora and fauna, which are responsible for the beauty of this northern Greek island and attracts many foreign visitors.

We would like to thank Crissy Stone and Andy Collins for most of the Skiathos Wild Life photographs, they have provided us with.

The best way to explore the Island’s Flora is by walking or hiking. You can smell the unique scent and admire the breathtaking colours the Island provides during spring and summer. When you are walking, you will pass by small gardens, orchards, fallow fields and heaths. You will be impressed of the Mediterranean Beauty and its variety on such a small island, (just above 50 square kilometres). In total there are around 1.000 plant species and subspecies growing on Skiathos and its neighbouring islands. Responsible for the all year round evergreen look are the many trees, wild olive, maple, Phoenician…
The value of the North Sporades Ecosystem was acknowledged toward the end of the 1970s, when the first attempts of protection began. The most famous is the Sporades Marine Park, around Alonissos. Here you can find one of the most endangered species in the world, the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus, Monachus). Many centuries ago they have been wide spread along the cost lines of the Mediterranean Sea. However, nowadays just a few hundred are left and most of them are living in the marine park of Alonissos.  It covers well over 2.200 km2  and was founded in 1992 by a Presidential…
The sea fauna is rich in different species as well.  Not only do we have over 300 different fish species, such as the Stenella coeruleoalba, Dolphins, Ziphius cabinostris, Psyseter macrocephalus with bigger in size the swordfish and tune, but people have also discovered the rare red coral in its splendour.
